Manta rays are among the most graceful animals in the ocean. Two species visit Fuvahmulah: the reef manta and the larger oceanic manta, which can have a wingspan of several metres. Both feed on plankton.
Mantas come to cleaning stations on the reef, where small fish clean their skin and gills. Around Fuvahmulah the best period for oceanic mantas is usually from March to May.
At a cleaning station, stay low and still and let the mantas come to you. Chasing them makes them leave. Both species are protected and listed as threatened.
