The island
One island,
one atoll
Fuvahmulah is a single-island atoll close to the equator, with no surrounding lagoon. The deep ocean starts just off its shores, which is exactly why big pelagic animals come so close. On land you will find freshwater lakes, wetlands, wide beaches and friendly local life.

The island
Fuvahmulah, the one-island atoll
Fuvahmulah is an atoll made of a single island, about 4.5 km long and 1.2 km wide, in Gnaviyani Atoll in the far south of the Maldives. It lies just south of the equator, around 500 km from Malé, and is one of the largest islands in the country.
Unlike most Maldivian islands, Fuvahmulah has two freshwater lakes, Bandaara Kilhi and Dhadimagi Kilhi, with wetlands and taro fields around them. On the northern tip, Thoondu beach is covered with small, smooth white pebbles. Life on the island is local and relaxed, far from resort islands: a real Maldivian community with guesthouses, small cafés and friendly people.
Why the ocean is so special here
With no lagoon around it, the island rises straight from deep water. Currents bring nutrients close to the reef, and with them the food chain that attracts tiger sharks, threshers, hammerheads, manta rays and whale sharks.
