Tiger shark diving in Fuvahmulah, Maldives

Fuvahmulah is one of the very few places on Earth where you can dive with tiger sharks all year round. The island lies about 500 km south of Malé, just below the equator, and stands alone in the Indian Ocean: it is a one-island atoll with no lagoon, so deep blue water starts a few metres from the reef. That is why big animals come so close.

Our tiger shark dive takes place at Tiger Garden, a shallow site near the harbour at around 8–12 metres. You settle on the sandy bottom with your guide while tiger sharks of three to five metres glide past at eye level. On other dives, the same ocean reefs bring thresher sharks, scalloped hammerheads, oceanic manta rays, whale sharks and schools of pelagic fish, depending on the season.

Why divers travel to Fuvahmulah

  • Tiger sharks all year round, not only in one season.
  • More than 300 individual tiger sharks identified over seven years in what scientists call the world’s largest tiger shark aggregation (Scientific Reports, 2024).
  • A shallow dive at 8–12 metres, with time to watch the sharks calmly.
  • Ocean diving close to shore: short boat rides to every site.
  • Protected sharks: shark fishing has been banned in the Maldives since 2010.
