Hammerhead sharks are named after their wide, flat head, which spreads their senses over a larger area and helps them find prey and turn quickly. Two species can be seen around Fuvahmulah: the scalloped hammerhead, which can gather in schools in the blue, and the great hammerhead, a large and usually solitary hunter.
Hammerheads are seasonal visitors here and are usually seen in deeper water along the outer reef. They are not guaranteed on any single dive, which makes every sighting special.
Both species are listed as Critically Endangered. Watching them in the wild, without disturbing them, is one of the best ways to show why they deserve protection.
